Montana White Water Kayaking On The Flathead River

If you’re new to white water kayaking, or if you like to enjoy the scenery as well as the white water, then the Flathead River in Montana is the place to be. When it comes to white water grades, the Flathead covers them, from the easiest to some fairly difficult sections. The best is always debatable depending on your experience, but the section known as Middle Fork offers a lot with a grading of I-IV.

A little advice – plan a two-day trip, pack your sleeping bag and camp stove and spend the night. Hotels are few and far between, but then, why ruin a great day out on the river by staying in a hotel – enjoy the outdoors while you are there. Middle Fork runs for 26 miles so you will need an overnight stay anyway.

Here’s a second tip – go with a couple of friends. Some can park at the end of the 26 mile trip while others can take everyone to the start of your trek. Once you have completed the trip, you have transport ready to take you back to your vehicles.

Montana has some of the best rivers for novices and those just looking for mid-grade experience. The white water sections are not abundant but those sections that do exist provide a real thrill, and a real work out. What a great way to stay fit.
